Spiderman “ Torment “

Torment is a story Arc written by Todd McFarlane, working colorist Bob Sharen, Gregory Wright and letterer Rick Parker.  It was published by Marvel Comics in Aug-Dec 1990.

Spiderman “Torment” starts off with New York City being attacked by a more vicious and deadlier version of the Lizard. Who could have set the Lizard on such a rampage ? Is it revenge, some chemical or mind control ? This new murderous behavior from one of his old foes troubles Peter Parker, who quickly descends into a state of confusion, panic and despair as other forces work to enact revenge for Spider man “ killing” Kraven.

The idea of making Spider man pay is wonderfully portrayed in this story through a maddening drum beat, both to spur on the Lizard and as well as the initial assault in Kraven’s Last Hunt   as well as to bring back an old character in connection to him — his old partner and lover CALYPSO. The mind altering effects of magic leading to Spiderman’s Torment.

McFarlane is a consummate visual storyteller and all of the style and substance, mixing conventional comic structures, dynamic splashes and unique layouts. Spiderman “Torment” is an incredible way to start off a new Spiderman Title paying homage to one of the best stories in superhero comics.
